Open Standard Software
Open Is Better - In our last newsletter we shared about open source
software, the key take-away being that open source is wonderful for
a host of reasons, but that cost may well not be one of the reasons
you go down the open source road. As mentioned in that piece, "Open
source is free only if your time is free."
In this newsletter we would like to talk about another key open issue-open
standards. An open standard is, according to Wikipedia,
a technical standard that "establishes uniform engineering
or technical criteria, methods, processes and practices," is "publicly available and has various rights to use associated
with it."
Most practitioners would add that a truly open standard needs to be
royalty free, vendor neutral, well documented and blessed by a competent
standards body. Open standards are the way different applications
talk to each other. Without ADL's SCORM or AICC's CMI (standards
important in the learning world), your online course would not know
how to tell a management system that a user has actually done something
with the content. Read

The 'LMS Reality Check' Webinar
On March 28th, Bryan Chapman, Chief Learning Strategist
at Chapman Alliance, and Brandon Hall Research Associate provided
guidance on how to leverage existing LMS (Learning Management Systems)
functionality to meet the needs of Human Resource (HR) Groups, as
well as tips on determining how much talent management functionality
is really needed.
In the webinar, Bryan discussed issues on whether to extend organizational
learning management capabilities to emcompass the entire employee
lifecycle from hiring to retirement or whether learning management systems
already have sufficient capability to cover the most important aspects
of performance management without adding new technology.
Are you interested in learning, talent and performance management
but were unable to attend the webinar?
